Spectacular Light Show as a Prelude to Provincial Grand Honour

Enlightenment of the Candidate for the Entered Apprentice Degree took on a new meaning at the Regular Meeting of Lodge Cadder Argyle No. 147 held on Thursday 4th May 2006. As an architectural feature, the roof skylights of the Temple have long been a talking point of Members and Visiting Brethren, but on this night they came into their own as an electrical storm passed overhead during the ceremony, culminating in a spectacular, simultaneous flash of lightning and crack of thunder just as the final charge was being delivered. While some of the Brethren jumped in their seats, Brother Cairns, Past Master, delivering the Charge, continued unperturbed. Meanwhile Brother Deans, the Candidate, never flinched, his attention being fixed by the professionalism of the address.

The Degree Ceremony being ended, the Master, Brother Cowan, presented the Mallet to the Provincial Grand Master, Brother John F. Herrick, who had been in attendance at the Meeting along with several Provincial Grand Office-bearers.

Brother Herrick paid compliments to the Brethren who had carried out a first class degree ritual, a truly enlightening ceremony. He then asked the Provincial Grand Marshal, Brother James Taylor, to present Brother Robert Seggie, Past Master, to the assembled Brethren.

Brother Herrick gave a short résumé of the Masonic career of Brother Seggie which had spanned 45 years, after which Provincial Grand Secretary read the Diploma honouring Brother Seggie with the Rank of Honorary Provincial Grand Chaplain.

Brother Herrick and the Provincial Junior Grand Chaplain, Brother Rev. Mark Johnstone, thereafter accompanied the Master, Brother Cowan, to the West. The Certificate was duly presented, and with few words Brother Cowan presented, on behalf of the Lodge, a Jewel of Office.

In thanking the Provincial Grand Master for this honour, Brother Seggie affirmed that this was not only an honour for himself, but for the Lodge, and thanked the Brethren whose support and friendship over 45 years had made this all possible. This was met with applause from the Brethren.

“A well deserved honour for one of Freemasonry’s true gentlemen.”
